2017 University Games – Gold Coast Multicultural Festival – Cocktails and Sundowners around the Broadwater (8/2/2017)

There is always so much to do on the Gold Coast and with events such as the Gold Coast Airport Marathon, the weekly Night Quarter Markets, and inaugural events like the Gold Coast Speech Festival it’s no wonder the coast is such a popular holiday destination. Plus you always have the stunning local beaches to explore, which are still beautiful even in winter – with a few brave souls going for a splash. And when you’re looking for the adrenaline rush you are never far from the local theme parks.

The Gold Coast Airport Marathon attracts over 43,000 visitors from outside the coast

The Gold Coast Airport Marathonwith 27,000+ participants in a range of races. Starting at 4pm and going till 10pm you’ll be able to enjoy a range of market stalls, street food, shipping container boutiques and live music. There are over 120 stallholders and there is always something new to capture your senses and interest.

Whether you want to enjoy some Spanish tapas, join in on the Freakshake craze, rummage through vintage clothes and boutique labels or try a charcoal burger you are in for a night to remember. Blues On Broadbeach 2017

Blues on Broadbeach is one of the iconic Gold Coast events, held from May 18th-21st.  Featuring artists like Bonnie Tyler, Ian Moss, Slim Jim Phantom Trio, Blues Arcadia, Little Billy, and Ezra Lee. It’s one of the largest free music festivals in the country, with stages and shows held throughout the streets of Broadbeach. In addition to the big name acts, the festival aims to highlight local Australian talent through a diverse program.

Wander through the main streets to discover hidden talents or get in early to get a good spot to watch your favourite acts. You can even book a table at one of the many restaurants, order dinner and truly enjoy ‘dinner and a show’. Just make sure you book early, as reservations can be hard to come by over the 4 days.

Koi Dining, La Porchetta and 1two3 are usually good picks to soak up the most atmosphere offering a delicious and diverse range of food plus they have, in past years, been front and centre for the main stage acts!

If you’re travelling with kids why not check out The Rockpools in Southport? Part of the Broadwater Parklands, this water feature includes a swimming lagoon on the beach, water jets and animal statues and a pool with water that isn’t too deep for the little ones.

Plus a little further south is the playground with its huge jumping pillow, pedal trains, flying fox, climbing equipment and much more. The area has its own café and is located just across the road from Australia Fair – there are also plenty of BBQ’s if you want to cook your own. It’s located in Mitchell Park (part of the Broadwater Parklands) just opposite North Street.

For the music fans, why not check out the Gold Coast Music Awards. Held in Surfers Paradise this year, after its previous two years in Burleigh – this free event is worth checking out! The first event held in 2015 sold out and received more than 30,000 votes. The awards are held on the 27th of April in Surfers Paradise and nominations are currently open. Established in 2002, the festival has grown with a record 14,148 attendees at the 2016 event.  Covering a range of genres you are sure to find something you love, from comedies, international dramas and indie favourites – you’ll experience something new and enjoy soaking up the atmosphere.

Experienced and budding filmmakers can enjoy the free seminars and workshops that are also included in the program.  Plus there will also be Q&A’s with industry professionals, panels and a range of talks.  The festival runs from the 19th – 30th of April will the official program being announced early March. Australian Street Entertainment Championships
Prepare to be captivated on April 14-17 during the 2017 Australian Street Entertainment Championships. The best street entertainers from around the country battle it out. From the professionals to those just beginning you’re guaranteed to have a laugh and be amazed at the performances.


Wander between acts, spend some time on Surfers Paradise beach, cruise between tents and stages or stay and watch a full performance. The choice is yours. You can even vote for your favourite act in the People’s Choice Awards. The event is free, but make sure you bring along some money to show your appreciation for the skill and talent that you’ll see – there will be plenty of hats around!

While the majority of the sculptures located along the coastline of Surfers Paradise, there are also 22 mini sculptures located on the ‘sand trail’ from Tweed Heads to Loganholme so be sure to keep an eye out for these additional pieces as well.  The art is inspired by the sand and sea and they have some secrets up their sleeves for the 2017 event. Last year’s event also featured some iconic DreamWorks creations with characters from Kung Fu Panda, Madagascar, Shrek and more carved into sand.




Hire a boat
For something a bit different why not hire a boat and cruise the Broadwater? There are so many little inlets and islands to explore, you can go over to South Stradbroke Island, spend the day at Tipplers Island (only accessible by boat), go fishing or just cruise around. Depending on the time of year, you might spot some dolphins or jelly fish and be sure to give the other boaties a wave as you go by!

With an abundance of fish in the offshore waters, and a huge variety of species it’s a must do activity for your next Gold Coast trip. Most of the charters will even let you keep what you catch (some will even be gutted and cleaned for you!). Some offer all day adventures, which will add a whole lot of excitement and fun to your holiday. Lamington National Park is another wonder to go see, this world heritage listed site covers 20,200 hectares of parkland and forests and is home to over 160 species. Whether you want to go for a drive through the hinterland, stop for coffee and cake, go for a short walk to through the forest, check out a lookout or go for a hike, there is something for everyone. O’Reillys, Binna Burra and Mt. Tamborine are spots you want to check out if you’re not sure where to start!

2. Daark Espresso is renowned for their coffee, friendly staff and delicious food. Offering a more relaxed vibe, healthy options and delicious breakfasts. This is the perfect place for brunch, an early morning breakfast, or lunch with friends, and their sweet potatoes are delicious!

3. The Lazy Lobster is another amazing seafood restaurant, they have even won the peoples choice for best seafood restaurant three times, and on the Gold Coast that’s a big call. Being on the Broadwater they have stunning views as well!

4. Madam Tojo’s Coffee Palace is one of the most quirky and loved spots on the Gold Coast, this eclectic café has a fabulous atmosphere, delicious cakes and a cozy environment. The staff are wonderful, and you’ll love the decor!
